March 15-21, 2009 is National Poison Prevention Week. National Poison Prevention Week is observed during the third week in March each year. It is a week nationally designated to highlight the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them.
The U.S. Congress established the National Poison Prevention Week back in 1961 (P.L. 87-319) to promote poison prevention.
More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year. More than 90 percent of these poisonings occur in the home. The majority of non-fatal poisonings occur in children younger than 6.
