Traffic Fatalities Record Low

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation statistics, 2009 traffic fatalities reached its lowest level since 1954. For 2009 total fatalities were approximately 33,963, representing a 9 percent decline from 2008’s fatalities of 37,261.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) attributes the reduction in deaths to the success of its “Click It or Ticket,” and “Over the Limit. Under arrest” law-enforcement campaigns. Other contributing factors are additional safety features incorporated into automobile designs. NHTSA continues to focus on “distracted driving” campaign in an effort to reduce fatalities as well.
